In March, 1998, Polymer Services, LLC performed a gel treatment to control excessive water production on a short radius horizontal completion in the Arbuckle Dolomite Formation in Cowley County, Kansas.

The well had been completed in October, 1996, for an initial production of 950 BOPD, no water. Due to the reservoir heterogeneity of this naturally fractured dolomite formation, water encroachment occurred rapidly through vertical fractures intersected by the wellbore.

The operator tried to isolate the water section using dual inflatable packers, but the water quickly re-invaded the wellbore through the extensive fracture network. When the operator contacted PSI for a recommendation, the well was only producing a trace of oil and 1150 BWPD.

Polymer Services designed and pumped a 500 bbl polymer gel treatment through the existing completion system. 120 days after treatment, the well has stabilized at 40 BOPD, 620 BWPD. An additional treatment plan is currently being developed to block off a second known water horizon, and facilitate removal of the inflatable packer system.

Polymer Services has the field proven technology to reduce excessive water production, and increase daily oil rated from horizontal well completions. This technology will reduce lifting costs and improve the profitability of horizontal wells. If you have wells exhibiting excess water production, with declining oil recovery rates, call us and let us design a water-blocking gel treatment for the well. This technology will improve your bottom line.
